Biofuel is a liquid or gaseous fuel derived from biomass, primarily ethanol, biodiesel and biogas. Biofuels can be combusted in vehicle engines as transport fuels and in stationary engines for heat and electricity generation. They can also be used for domestic heating and cooking (for example, as ethanol gels). Conventional biofuels are principally ethanol produced by fermentation of sugar or starch crops (such as wheat and corn), and FAME biodiesel produced from oil crops such as palm oil and canola and from waste oils and fats. Advanced biofuels are made from feedstocks derived from the lignocellulosic fractions of biomass sources or from algae. They are made using biochemical and thermochemical conversion processes, some of which are still under development.
